Show the working for text → decimal

This converter works on code values, one at a time, from the table. Codes are not capped, so values above 127 are accepted. For whole text rather than single codes, use Binary to Text; for codes capped to 0 to 127, use ASCII to Text.

How do you convert decimal to ASCII?

Decimal to text conversion reads each number as a Unicode code point and writes the character it names; 0 to 127 are the ASCII characters, so 72 is H.

In short

Decimal codes 72 105 spell "Hi". Read each number as a character code and write the character it names: 72 is H and 105 is i. Numbers above 127 are Unicode code points, so 233 is é.

  1. Read the first code: 72.
  2. Find its row in the table: 72 is H.
  3. Repeat for every code and join the characters in order: 72 105 = Hi.

Decimal to text reads 72 as the code for H; the binary and ASCII converter grid explains when a decimal value is a plain number instead.

Decimal to Text Conversion Table

The codes this page works through, each with the character it stands for and the same value in hex, octal and binary. Find the code in the first column and read across; the row is the whole conversion. Codes 0 to 31 and 127 have no glyph, so the Char column shows their short name instead. This page shows the rows you need; ASCII code chart (decimal, hex, octal, binary) carries all 128.

Worked Example: 72 105 to Text

One code value, taken from the table and written out in full. This is the same working the converter shows when you turn on "show steps".

charcodedecimal
H
72
72
i
105
105

Result: 72 105 = Hi

Start with the first code, 72. Row 72 of the table is the letter H. There is no arithmetic to get wrong, only a row to find, and every base the table carries lands on the same row.

The rest follow the same way: 105 is the letter i. Joining the characters in order gives Hi. A code above 127 is read as a Unicode code point, so 233 is é.

Check it in reverse

Read it back and you arrive where you started: the letter H is code 72, which is 72 in decimal. The table is a two-way lookup, not a calculation, so no rounding or padding can change the answer. To verify the result by hand, convert the characters back to decimal codes and compare it with the value you started from.

What Changes the Code Output?

Values above 127

Values above 127 are accepted here as Unicode code points, because this converter is not capped to ASCII: 233 is é and 8364 is €. The codes ASCII itself defines are listed in the ASCII table of codes and characters.

Which base the code is written in

The same code can be written in decimal, hex, octal or binary: 65, 41, 101 and 01000001 are all the letter A. This page reads decimal only, so a code in another base names a different row.

Control codes and printable codes

Codes 32 to 126 are printable characters; 0–31 and 127 are control codes. A control code has no glyph, so the table shows its short name instead — 10 is LF, 13 is CR. Converting one is valid; displaying one is not.

One code or a list

Several codes separated by spaces, commas or new lines convert as a list, in order, and each keeps its own row. The separator is a display choice and does not change any value.

Decimal to Text in Code

The same rule in one line. Both take code values and return the characters.

Python: ''.join(chr(int(g)) for g in s.split())
JavaScript: String.fromCodePoint(...s.split(/\s+/).map(Number))

Common Mistakes

  • Typing text where a code value belongs. The converter reads 72 as one code, not as the characters 7 and 2 — for whole text use ASCII code to character lookup.
  • Reading a code in the wrong base. 41 is A in hex and ) in decimal.
  • Pasting UTF-8 byte values where code points belong: 195 169 reads as é, not é. The converter says what the bytes would have spelled.
  • Joining decimal codes with no separator. 72105 is one number, not 72 and 105, because decimal codes have no fixed width.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which decimal values are printable characters?

Codes 32 to 126. ASCII codes 32–126 are printable characters; 0–31 and 127 are control characters (for example 10 = line feed, 13 = carriage return, 32 = space). Below 32 the converter names the control code instead of drawing a glyph.

What does a decimal code above 127 convert to?

This converter is not capped, so 233 gives é and 8364 gives €. Codes 128–255 are not part of ASCII. They belong to extended sets such as Latin-1 (ISO 8859-1), where 255 is ÿ; in pure ASCII a value above 127 is out of range. For reference, é is U+00E9 and encodes as C3 A9 (2 bytes).

How do you convert decimal to ASCII in Python and Excel?

Python: chr(65) gives A. Excel: =CHAR(65) does the same for codes 1 to 255. ASCII defines 128 characters, codes 0–127, using 7 bits; in practice each code is stored in one 8-bit byte with a leading 0.

Every code here reverses: the same value converts straight back in the character to decimal code direction.

The rest of the family sits on every binary converter.
