How do you generate lorem ipsum text?
Placeholder text is filler that stands in for copy nobody has written yet. It is Latin-shaped and deliberately unreadable, so that what you look at is the layout rather than the words.
- Choose whether you want paragraphs, sentences or words, then type how many. The hint under the field gives the ceiling for whichever one is selected.
- Decide whether to open the traditional way. Left on, the first sentence is the one every reader recognises; turned off, the draw starts at a random word instead.
- Decide whether each paragraph comes back wrapped in a p tag. Off gives plain text for a design file, on gives markup for a template.
- Press Generate. Every word after the opening is drawn at random from a pool of corrupted Latin, and the counts beside the result are of the text rather than of any tags.
Once real copy replaces the lorem ipsum, the word counter gives its word and character counts to set against the placeholder's.

Ask for three paragraphs again and those counts move, because sentence lengths are drawn rather than fixed. The table above gives the size a setting produces, not a promise, and a column that only holds at one exact word count was never going to hold real copy.
What Should You Know Before You Use It?
Cicero, two letters short
Lorem is not a Latin word. Cicero wrote dolorem ipsum, meaning pain itself, and the specimen everyone uses starts two letters late; who dropped them, and when, nobody wrote down. The sentence it was cut out of argues that nobody wants pain for its own sake, which is some distance from the use it has been put to since.
Latin-shaped, not random letters
The words are Latin-shaped rather than random letters because a paragraph is read as a texture first: word and sentence lengths near those of real prose give a block the right shade of grey, and random characters give it the wrong one. It is why this page draws whole words rather than characters: the eye takes in a word by its shape before it reads it.
The paragraph that goes live
Placeholder text reaches production more often than anyone means it to, through the block nobody wrote copy for. Search a finished site for the word lorem before it goes live, and again the week after. The failure is a quiet one: nobody complains about a paragraph they never scrolled to, so it sits there until a customer reads it out loud.

Lorem ipsum is corrupted Latin. Its words come from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a treatise on ethics written in 45 BC, and the passage every specimen descends from is sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33.
Why is placeholder text nonsense instead of real writing?
Placeholder text is meaningless on purpose. Words you can read pull the eye into the sentence; words you cannot read leave you looking at the line length, the spacing and the shape of the block, which is what a layout is judged on.
When is lorem ipsum the wrong text to test with?
Latin is the wrong text for testing a layout that has to hold other languages. It hides how a German compound noun overruns a narrow column, how Arabic runs the line the other way, and how much room a translation wants that the English never did.
Is lorem ipsum bad for SEO?
Not by itself. What costs you is the page you meant to write and did not: a template still carrying filler has nothing on it for anyone to rank, cite or read. The risk is not the Latin, it is shipping the Latin.
