Changelog

What changed on iToolHub, and when. Corrections to results are listed here as well as fixed, so a reader who saw a wrong answer can tell that it was wrong.

: corrections to results

  • Hex to ASCII answered "48 69" with the decimal codes "72 105" instead of the text "Hi", and its steps said "72 is 72". It now answers with the characters, and can show the decimal codes as an option.
  • Decimal to text and text to decimal read numbers as UTF-8 bytes, although both pages say they use Unicode code points. They now use code points, so 233 is é.
  • The units converters read "1 5" as fifteen, and "5 MV" as millivolts instead of megavolts. Both are fixed; "1 5" is now refused with the reason.
  • The sales tax calculator never showed its answer. It does now.
  • On JSON to XML, a paragraph printed ' + ' in the middle of a sentence. On the ASCII converters, the "Code base" setting did nothing; it works now.
  • The URL, HTML and Base64 guide said Base64 output grows by a quarter, and described the bits the wrong way round. It now says the output is about a third larger than the input, which matches the tools.
  • The password generator's "one from each set" option favoured passwords with an even mix of character types. Every password that meets the options is now equally likely, and the strength shown is exact rather than an upper bound.

: every tool upgraded

  • Every tool you type into now has the same controls: copy the result, download it as a file, copy a link that reopens the tool with your value in it, load an example and clear. Options you choose are remembered on your device. Error messages name the character or value that is wrong and where it is.
  • Binary, hex and octal converters accept values with or without spaces and with 0b or 0x prefixes, and show accented letters and emoji one character per line of working.
  • The image converters take several files at once, keep your file names, show the size before and after, turn photos upright, and save everything in one ZIP. PNG and JPG to ICO let you choose the icon sizes.
  • Unit converters read what you type, such as "6 ft to m", and show the value in every unit of its kind. The storage converters link to the guides that explain the 1,000 and 1,024 readings.
  • The Base64, URL and HTML tools gained modes (URL-safe Base64, form encoding, named or numeric entities), notice text that is already encoded, and accept files.
  • The data format converters open and save files, detect the CSV delimiter, and point to the line and column of an error.
  • The color converters have a color picker and accept pasted CSS. Number to words writes cheque amounts; words to number reads "a hundred" and "2.5 million".
  • Every calculator updates as you type. The loan calculator shows the full payment schedule as a table you can download. The Stripe and PayPal fee calculators were checked against both companies' pricing pages on this date, and show both directions: the fee on a charge, and what to charge to receive an amount.
  • The homepage and the tool list help you find a tool: the search accepts typos and the words people use ("translator", "b64", "mb to gb"), and a typed value such as #ff8800 goes to the right converter. Pages print cleanly.
  • Four retired addresses now redirect to the page that does the same job: the JSON validator and minifier to the JSON formatter, the ICO converter to PNG to ICO, and the favicon post to favicon sizes.

: storage, GIF, BMP and CMYK converters

  • Added storage converters for one pair of units each, from the digital storage converter: KB and MB, MB and GB, KB and GB, GB and TB, and bits and bytes, in both directions. Each answer shows the decimal reading (1,000) and the binary reading (1,024) side by side.
  • The image converter now writes GIF files itself, so PNG to GIF and JPG to GIF are back. Added GIF to PNG, GIF to JPG, BMP to PNG and BMP to JPG. A GIF input converts its first frame only, and the page says how many frames were left out.
  • Added CMYK to the color converter: RGB to CMYK, HEX to CMYK and back. The result is the published formula, not a print profile, and the page says so.
  • Added guides: RGB vs CMYK, a Roman numerals chart from 1 to 100 written by the same code the Roman numeral converters use, PNG vs JPG, favicon sizes, what a CSV file is, JSON vs XML, megabits vs megabytes and MB vs MiB.
  • Example links on converter pages now load their value without creating a separate address for each example, and the "Report an error" link now works on every page.

: named maintainer and editorial standards

  • Every tool, hub and guide now shows who maintains it and the date its content last changed, under the title.
  • Added an author page, an policy on how pages are written and corrected and a disclaimer, and this changelog.
  • The privacy policy, terms, contact and about pages now name the operator and give a postal address and a mailbox.
  • The loan, fee, sales tax, margin, discount and CPM calculators now carry a notice beside the result about what they do not cover.
  • Added a tool search to the header, a menu on phones, and an "On this page" list on long pages. Secondary text is darker for contrast, and buttons and fields are larger on touch screens.

: addresses and loading

  • The www address and the preview address now redirect to itoolhub.com, so each page has one address.
  • Pages removed in the rebuild, including the old language versions, now say they are gone instead of showing the homepage. Addresses that never existed show a proper not-found page.
  • The two typefaces are served from this site instead of Google Fonts.

: the rebuilt site goes live

  • The rebuilt iToolHub went live on itoolhub.com, replacing the previous site. Every converter shows its working, and every fixed value is generated from the fact base.
