In decimal storage units 1 GB is 1,000,000 kB, so multiply gigabytes by 1,000,000 to get kilobytes. In binary units 1 GiB is 1,048,576 KiB.

How do you convert GB to KB?

GB to KB conversion multiplies by 1,000,000, because one gigabyte is 1,000,000 kilobytes in the decimal prefixes; in binary units one gibibyte is 1,048,576 kibibytes, so the multiplier becomes 1,048,576.

1. Type the number of gigabytes into the box at the top of the page.

3. Read the decimal answer in kB, the reading the symbols GB and kB carry in the SI.

Worked Example: 4 GB to kB

The first question for this page, worked both ways. Each reading passes through bytes, which is where the two part company.

A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes and a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824, so the same figure lands on two different byte counts before it is multiplied again.

Why Do Sites Give Different KB Counts for 1 GB?

Mixing the readings gives a third answer: 1 GB of 1000000000 bytes is 976562.5 KiB, and 1 GiB of 1073741824 bytes is 1073741.824 kB. Only 1000000 kB and 1048576 KiB keep both units in the same reading.
