  1. 1,048,576 x 1,024 1,073,741,824 byte
  2. 1,073,741,824 / 1,073,741,824 1 gibibyte

In decimal storage units 1 GB is 1,000,000 kB, so divide kilobytes by 1,000,000 to get gigabytes. In binary units 1 GiB is 1,048,576 KiB.

This page converts storage from kilobytes to gigabytes and leads with the decimal answer, because kB and GB carry SI prefixes, which stand strictly for powers of ten. The binary answer beside it is the count Windows File Explorer shows under the same GB label.

How do you convert KB to GB?

KB to GB conversion divides by 1,000,000, because one gigabyte is 1,000,000 kilobytes in the decimal prefixes; in binary units one gibibyte is 1,048,576 kibibytes, so the divisor becomes 1,048,576.

In short

1,048,576 kB is 1.048576 GB: divide kilobytes by 1,000,000 for gigabytes. Counted in steps of 1,024, the same figure is 1,048,576 KiB, which is 1 GiB.

  1. Type the number of kilobytes into the box at the top of the page.
  2. Divide it by 1,000,000, the number of kilobytes in one gigabyte.
  3. Read the decimal answer in GB, the reading the symbols kB and GB carry in the SI.
  4. If the figure was counted in steps of 1,024, read the binary answer beside it instead: the same number divided by 1,048,576, in GiB.

Kilobytes and gigabytes are two rungs of one ladder; to convert any storage unit into another, including the binary units, use the full storage converter.

Each row gives the decimal answer and, beside it, the binary answer for the same figure read as KiB. Exact values print in full; a value longer than ten significant figures is rounded to ten.

Worked Example: 1,048,576 kB to GB

The first question for this page, worked both ways. Each reading passes through bytes, which is where the two part company.

What is 1,048,576 kB in GB?

Decimal (SI)
  1. 1,048,576 x 1,000 1,048,576,000 byte
  2. 1,048,576,000 / 1,000,000,000 1.048576 gigabyte
Binary (IEC)
  1. 1,048,576 x 1,024 1,073,741,824 byte
  2. 1,073,741,824 / 1,073,741,824 1 gibibyte

Result: 1,048,576 kB = 1.048576 GB; 1,048,576 KiB = 1 GiB

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes and a kibibyte is 1,024, so the same figure lands on two different byte counts before it is divided again.

Check it in reverse

Run each answer back through its own step and the starting figure returns: 1.048576 GB x 1,000,000 = 1,048,576 kB, and 1 GiB x 1,048,576 = 1,048,576 KiB. To verify any other value, read the gigabytes back as kilobytes and compare the result with the figure you started from.

Where These Factors Come From

The factors and rules above are read from the knowledge base rather than typed for the page. These are the lines it holds for this pair.

  • kilobyte (decimal), factor to byte 1000
  • gigabyte (decimal), factor to byte 1000000000
  • kibibyte, factor to byte 1024
  • gibibyte, factor to byte 1073741824
  • SI Brochure (BIPM 9th edition) section 3, prefix rule The SI prefixes refer strictly to powers of 10. They should not be used to indicate powers of 2 (for example, one kilobit represents 1000 bits and not 1024 bits).
  • binary prefixes, adoption The prefixes kibi (Ki), mebi (Mi), gibi (Gi) and tebi (Ti) stand for 2^10, 2^20, 2^30 and 2^40. The IEC first adopted them in 1999, as Amendment 2 to IEC 60027-2, and they are now part of IEC 80000-13.
  • How this page reports a result result in the target unit, decimal (SI) reading first and binary (IEC) reading beside it where the prefixes differ; printed in full where it fits in 10 significant figures, otherwise rounded to 10

How Far Apart Are the Readings After Two Steps?

Kilobytes to gigabytes is two prefix steps. The decimal reading multiplies 1000 by 1000 for a factor of 1000000; the binary reading multiplies 1024 by 1024 for 1048576, so the gap between the readings grows from 2.4 percent at one step to 4.8576 percent at two.

The further apart two prefixes sit, the wider the gap, so a figure that looks close enough at one step has drifted by the time it reaches gigabytes. Pick the reading first, then convert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1000 kB equal to 1 GB?

No. 1,000 kB is 1 MB. A gigabyte is 1,000,000 kB, because the steps run kilo to mega to giga at 1,000 each.

Is 1024 kB equal to 1 GB?

No. 1,024 KiB is 1 MiB. A gibibyte is 1,048,576 KiB, because each binary step is 1,024 and 1,024 x 1,024 is 1,048,576.

What is bigger, kB or GB?

A gigabyte, by a factor of 1,000,000 in SI units or 1,048,576 in binary units. A file of a few hundred kB is a tiny fraction of 1 GB in either reading.
