How do you convert MB to GB?

Why Is Memory Counted in Steps of 1,024?

JEDEC's dictionary defines kilo (K), mega (M) and giga (G), as prefixes to units of semiconductor storage capacity, as 1024, 1024^2 and 1024^3, and says these power-of-two definitions are included only to reflect common usage.

That is how a memory module and a storage drive come to use the same letters for different sizes. Read a memory figure in the binary column, and any other figure in the decimal one unless you know it was counted in steps of a power of two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1000 or 1024 MB equal to a GB?

Both, in different readings. In SI units 1 GB is 1,000 MB. In binary units 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB, and memory sizes and Windows File Explorer use that count under the GB label. The converter above prints the two side by side.

Why does 8,192 MB of memory count as 8 GB?

8,192 MiB is exactly 8 GiB, and JEDEC's dictionary gives the G in memory sizes the value 1024 x 1024 x 1024. Read in SI units, 8,192 MB is 8.192 GB.

Which is bigger, MB or GB?

A gigabyte. 1 GB is 1,000 MB in SI units and 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB in binary units, so a size in GB is about a thousand times the same figure in MB.
